Change your heart radically through the love of Jesus Christ.

Generosity is one of the most consistent themes in Scripture. From the tithe laws of Leviticus to the widow's two coins in the Temple, from Paul's collection for Jerusalem's poor to the ultimate gift of God's own Son — giving is woven into the fabric of biblical faith.

These 55 Bible verses about giving cover the full spectrum: tithing, offerings, cheerful giving, generosity toward the poor, and the spiritual rewards that follow open-handed living.

God's Example of Giving

John 3:16 KJV

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Every theology of giving starts here. God gave what cost Him most. Generosity is God's native language.

Romans 8:32 KJV

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

James 1:17 KJV

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

All generosity traces back to God. We give because He first gave.

Cheerful Giving

2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

The New Testament's clearest giving verse. God values the spirit of generosity more than the amount.

2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:6 KJV

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

The law of the harvest applies to generosity. What you sow determines what you reap.

Luke 6:38 KJV

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Luke 6:38 NIV

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

The Tithe

Malachi 3:10 KJV

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

The one place in Scripture where God explicitly invites us to test Him. Tithe faithfully and watch what happens.

Malachi 3:10 NIV

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

Proverbs 3:9-10 KJV

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

Deuteronomy 14:22 KJV

Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

Leviticus 27:30 KJV

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's: it is holy unto the Lord.

Giving to the Poor

Proverbs 19:17 KJV

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

Giving to the poor is lending directly to God. The return is guaranteed.

Proverbs 19:17 NIV

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

Matthew 25:35 KJV

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in.

Jesus identifies Himself with the poor. Ministry to them is ministry to Him.

Proverbs 22:9 KJV

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

Deuteronomy 15:11 KJV

For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open wide thine hand unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.

1 John 3:17 KJV

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Proverbs 28:27 KJV

He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

The Widow's Two Coins

Mark 12:41-44 KJV

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

One of Jesus' most profound teachings on giving. Percentage matters more than amount. She gave 100%.

Generosity as a Spiritual Discipline

1 Timothy 6:17-19 KJV

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 NIV

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and willing to share.

Matthew 6:19-21 KJV

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Where you put your money is where your heart is. Generosity realigns the heart toward eternity.

Acts 20:35 KJV

I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Promises to the Generous

Proverbs 11:24-25 KJV

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

The paradox of biblical economics: generosity leads to increase, not decrease.

Proverbs 11:24-25 NIV

One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

2 Corinthians 9:8 KJV

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.

Philippians 4:19 KJV

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

God's supply to us is always connected to our openness toward others.

Isaiah 58:10 KJV

And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday.

New Testament Generosity Community

Acts 2:44-45 KJV

And all that believed were together, and had all things common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Acts 4:32 KJV

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

The early church practiced radical generosity. Their giving was their witness.

Hebrews 13:16 KJV

But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Romans 12:13 KJV

Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

5 Common Questions About Giving in the Bible

Q: Is tithing (10%) required for Christians today? The tithe was part of the Mosaic Law's civil code for Israel. The New Testament doesn't repeat this specific percentage command, but it consistently calls Christians to generosity — proportional, cheerful, and sacrificial. Many Christians begin with 10% as a baseline and grow from there.

Q: Should I tithe on gross income or net? Scripture says "firstfruits" and "increase" — both language for pre-deduction giving. Most theologians who apply the tithe principle recommend gross income as the standard.

Q: What if I can't afford to give? Start with what you can. 2 Corinthians 8:12 says "the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have." The widow's two coins shows that small, faithful gifts are seen and honored by God.

Q: What's the difference between tithing and offering? The tithe (a tenth) was the baseline obligation in the OT — it was God's portion. Offerings were above the tithe — freewill gifts, thank offerings, love gifts. In the New Testament spirit, everything we have belongs to God and we are stewards.

Q: Can I give to charities instead of the church? The New Testament pattern is local church first (1 Corinthians 16:2, Galatians 6:10), then broader giving to the poor and other needs. Giving to relief organizations, missionaries, and other ministries is also commended — but generally as in addition to, not instead of, local church support.
