Spiritual Direction: What It Is and Why Every Christian Needs It
There's a strange paradox at the heart of contemporary Christian life.
We have more Bible study resources than any generation in history. More podcasts, more commentaries, more conferences, more apps. And yet many sincere Christians report a nagging sense that their faith is wide but not deep — rich in information but thin in actual transformation. They know a lot about God. But they're not sure they know God.
For much of Christian history, the remedy for this condition had a name: spiritual direction.
It is not therapy. It is not mentorship in the conventional sense. It is not accountability in the way most evangelical Christians mean it. It is something older, quieter, and more specifically aimed at one thing: helping you pay attention to God.
What Is Spiritual Direction?
The classic definition comes from William A. Barry and William J. Connolly, two Jesuit priests whose 1982 book The Practice of Spiritual Direction shaped a generation of practitioners:
"Spiritual direction is help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God's personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship."
Notice what is at the center of that definition: God's communication to the person, not the director's wisdom, insights, or techniques. The spiritual director is not the expert telling you what to do. The spiritual director is a skilled, attentive companion helping you notice what God is already doing.
Portland Seminary (George Fox University) describes it as: "a relational process in which a trained spiritual guide listens to and companions someone who desires a deeper relationship with God. For Christians, this means becoming more like Jesus Christ."
Richard Foster, author of Celebration of Discipline, wrote that spiritual direction "provides an 'address' on the house of your life so that you can be 'addressed' by God in prayer." It gives your interior life structure, so that God's movement within you can be recognized rather than missed.
Is Spiritual Direction in the Bible?
The practice by its modern name is not explicitly biblical — but its substance is woven throughout Scripture.
Moses and Jethro (Exodus 18): Moses' father-in-law watches him exhausting himself trying to judge every dispute in Israel and says, plainly: "What you are doing is not good. You will wear yourself out — and these people too. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone." He then provides wise counsel on delegation and discernment. Jethro functioned as something close to a spiritual director for Moses.
Elijah and the still small voice (1 Kings 19): The prophet, burned out and suicidal under a broom tree, receives not rebuke but care — food, water, sleep — and then a question: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" That question — probing, non-anxious, inviting self-examination — is the archetypal spiritual direction question.
Samuel and Eli (1 Samuel 3): The young Samuel hears God's voice and doesn't recognize it. Eli discerns what is happening and teaches Samuel how to respond: "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" Eli's role was to help Samuel attend to God's communication to him — the heart of spiritual direction.
Paul and Barnabas, Paul and Timothy: The New Testament presents a pattern of experienced believers accompanying younger ones, not just in theological knowledge but in discernment and formation. Barnabas's name literally means "son of encouragement" — paraklesis — the same word used for the Holy Spirit's role as Counselor.
The broader New Testament: Hebrews 13:17 speaks of leaders who "keep watch over your souls." The Greek agrupneō — staying awake, keeping vigil — describes a pastor/shepherd function that includes attentiveness to the soul's interior movements, not just external behavior.
How Spiritual Direction Differs from Other Relationships
Christians often confuse spiritual direction with three other things. The distinctions matter.
Spiritual Direction vs. Therapy or Counseling
Therapy focuses on psychological healing — processing trauma, addressing mental health conditions, developing emotional coping skills. The frame of reference is often the person's past, their wounds, their cognitive or behavioral patterns.
Spiritual direction focuses on the person's relationship with God. It concerns the present and ongoing movement of God in one's life, the person's responses to that movement, and the deepening of intimacy with God. A spiritual director is not qualified to provide therapy (unless separately trained), and a therapist is not operating as a spiritual director — even if they are Christian.
That said, the two can beautifully complement each other. Many people in therapy would benefit from also having a spiritual director, and vice versa.
Spiritual Direction vs. Discipleship
Discipleship in most evangelical contexts involves teaching someone the content and practices of the Christian faith — theology, Bible study, prayer disciplines, community life, service. It is often more educational and behavioral.
Spiritual direction is less about information transfer and more about accompanied discernment. The spiritual director is not primarily teaching; they are listening — to the directee, and listening for what God may be doing.
Spiritual Direction vs. Accountability
Accountability, as commonly practiced, involves reporting behaviors — did you read your Bible this week, did you avoid pornography, did you follow through on your commitments? It is behavior-focused and often shame-adjacent.
Spiritual direction operates in a completely different register. It creates space for honest interior exploration without the performance anxiety that often undermines accountability relationships. You bring your interior movements — consolations and desolations, images in prayer, resistances, desires, fears — and together with the director, you notice what God may be saying through them.
What Actually Happens in a Session?
A typical spiritual direction session lasts 45–60 minutes, usually monthly. Unlike therapy, less frequent sessions are the norm because the "work" happens between sessions — in your prayer life, daily experience, and attentiveness to God.
The director begins by creating a quiet, prayerful atmosphere. Sessions often begin with a few minutes of silence or centering prayer, an acknowledgment that this conversation is happening in God's presence.
Then the directee shares — typically whatever has been happening in their prayer life and their relationship with God since the last session. The director listens deeply and may ask clarifying questions. These questions are not probing for information; they are invitations to go deeper.
Common spiritual direction questions include:
- "Where did you sense God in that experience?"
- "What was your response to God in that moment?"
- "What is it like for you to sit with that?"
- "What do you desire from God right now?"
Notice what is not in that list: "What does the Bible say about this?" or "What should you do?" The director trusts the Holy Spirit to be the primary director, and their role is to help you attune yourself to that voice.
At the end of a session, the director may offer a reflection, a Scripture passage, or a prayer exercise to carry forward — not as homework, but as an invitation.
The History: Where Did Spiritual Direction Come From?
While the practice has deep roots in the Hebrew tradition (every rabbi was, in a sense, a guide of souls), the formal practice of Christian spiritual direction emerged in the Desert Fathers and Mothers of Egypt and Syria in the 3rd–5th centuries.
These men and women — Antony, Pachomius, Macrina, Syncletica — fled to the desert to seek God with radical intentionality. Younger seekers would come to them with a simple, urgent question: Abba (or Amma), give me a word. The elder would offer a saying, an image, or a practice — not a lecture but a word precisely fitted to the seeker's condition.
The tradition was systematized in the monastic orders, particularly the Benedictine and Ignatian traditions. The Jesuits, founded by Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), developed the most sophisticated framework: the Spiritual Exercises, a structured retreat in which a director accompanies a retreatant through a month of prayer, helping them discern God's movement in their interior life.
But spiritual direction has never been solely Catholic. The Eastern Orthodox tradition has the staretz (elder/spiritual father/mother) who guides souls through interior prayer. The Celtic Christian tradition had the anam cara — "soul friend" — a companion for the spiritual journey. Protestant reformers like Calvin and Luther wrote extensively about the importance of having a wise pastor who knows you and attends to your soul.
In recent decades, Protestant and evangelical Christians have rediscovered spiritual direction through writers like Richard Foster, Dallas Willard, Eugene Peterson, and Ruth Haley Barton. The practice is increasingly recognized across denominational lines as an ecumenical treasure of the church.
Signs You Might Benefit from a Spiritual Director
Not everyone needs formal spiritual direction. But here are signs that it might be particularly valuable for you:
- Your prayer life feels dry or routine — you go through the motions but sense little vitality.
- You're at a major life transition — a vocation decision, a season of grief, a relationship crisis, a faith crisis.
- You have rich interior experiences in prayer — consolations, desolations, vivid images, strong desires — but no framework for making sense of them.
- You feel spiritually lonely — surrounded by people but unable to talk deeply about your actual relationship with God.
- You're making a significant decision and need discernment, not just advice.
- You're a leader or pastor who finds that the role makes it difficult to be honestly vulnerable about your own spiritual life.
- Your faith is growing in complexity and your current models of God or prayer no longer fit your experience.
How to Find a Spiritual Director
Finding the right spiritual director is a process of discernment in itself.
Start with prayer. Ask God to bring the right person to you. This is not a request to make casually; it is a declaration of desire.
Ask your pastor or trusted Christian friends. Many pastors know of trained spiritual directors in the area. Catholic, Episcopal, and mainline Protestant churches often have or know of directors. Some monasteries and retreat centers offer direction by appointment.
Look for trained directors. The primary training bodies include:
- Spiritual Directors International (SDI) — maintains a global directory at sdicompanions.org
- Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation (Washington, D.C.)
- The Ignatian Spirituality retreats network
- Many seminaries now offer spiritual direction training programs
Consider compatibility. The relationship between director and directee is personal. It should feel safe but also have some holy edge — someone who will gently challenge you, not just affirm you. It is entirely appropriate to meet with someone for two or three sessions before committing to an ongoing relationship.
Don't worry about denominational alignment. A Catholic spiritual director can beautifully serve a Baptist, and an evangelical director can serve a Catholic. The Holy Spirit is not bound by denominational lines, and neither is genuine attentiveness to God.
A Practice: The Daily Examen as Entry Point
If you want to experience the spirit of spiritual direction without immediately finding a director, the Daily Examen — from Ignatius of Loyola's tradition — is a beautiful entry point.
Each evening, take 10–15 minutes in prayer and ask:
- Gratitude: For what moments today am I most grateful?
- Review: Walk back through the day. Where did I sense God's presence? Where did I feel distant from God?
- Emotion: What was the deepest emotion of my day? What might God be saying through it?
- Repentance: Where did I fall short? I bring this to God honestly.
- Forward: What am I anxious or hopeful about tomorrow? I give it to God.
This practice, done consistently, develops exactly the interior attentiveness that spiritual direction is designed to deepen. You begin to notice the movement of God in the ordinary texture of daily life.
Conclusion: The Gift of Being Seen
There is a reason people who experience genuine spiritual direction often describe it as one of the most transforming relationships of their lives. It is not because the director is extraordinary (though some are). It is because the experience of being fully seen — spiritually, honestly, non-judgmentally — in the context of God's presence is itself an encounter with grace.
The spiritual director is not the point. God is the point. But God, who could speak to us directly and without intermediary (and does, in Scripture and Spirit), has also chosen to use human witnesses, human listeners, human companions on the road.
You were not made for the spiritual life alone. The soul flourishes in attended companionship. Go find your Eli. Ask for a word. Learn to say, with Samuel: "Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening."
